Troop 161 had an enjoyable weekend campout at Jim Hogg Park from July 17-19, with around 14 participants attending. The original campsite was flooded so the Troop had to change locations and go to Jim Hogg Park instead, which was only about a 20-30 minute drive away. The main focus of the campout was to relax, have fun, and complete sign-offs on Scout book requirements.
During the weekend, scouts spent time swimming and enjoying the outdoors. The shorter drive made the campout convenient and everyone had more time to enjoy themselves. However there were some inconveniences such as the Troop having to go to Russell Park to try their luck for fishing there instead as the original fishing spots at Jim Hogg weren’t as abundant with fish.
For troops planning a similar campout, we recommend bringing sunscreen and swim gear to take full advantage of the amazing opportunity at Jim Hogg Park. And for those planning on fishing, we recommend going to the near-by camp of Russell Park for better fishing spots.
There were also great amenities as the bathrooms were really good and the beach being a relaxing and fun place to enjoy. Lastly, we would recommend troops that are willing to come here to bring more sunscreen so scouts are prepared for the heat, and to be ready for the water activities.
Overall, the campout was a great opportunity to relax, spend time together, and complete requirements in a fun environment. A few Scouts from Troop 161 rated the campus of a solid 7.5/10 and would recommend Jim Hogg Park to other troops looking for a laid-back and chill camping trip.
