This summer, Troop 161 traveled around 13 hours to Cris Dobbins Summer Camp for a five-day experience. Along the way, the troop made several stops at gas stations and food spots such as Arby’s and Dunkin’. As the trip was more than 10 hours, the troop had to split up the time by stopping at the Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian overnight, of which gladly accepted our troop. They taught us about different tribes and their history. On the return trip, they stayed overnight at the First Christian Church in Amarillo.

During camp, the scouts enjoyed whitewater rafting, horseback riding, shotgun shooting, a sunrise hike, and even participated in the camp’s early morning polar plunge. The beautiful scenery and the horseback riding experience made the camp a unique option compared to other camps. Campers stayed in a mix of military-style tents and personal tents, while meals were served in the dining hall.

For any troops planning to attend, we recommend packing for a few chilly mornings and bringing clothes that can handle dusty conditions. There weren’t many bugs either. Overall, our troop gave an average rating of around 7.5/10 and would totally recommend it to troops looking for an adventurous summer camp.
