My “Journey to Jamboree” began several months ago when my granddaughter decided she wanted to go to the Jamboree. We were late in joining and I had a big shock when I found out that it costs $3600 for a Scout to go to Jamboree. Why so much? Well, our council’s contingent will be flying up and back, so airfare is part of that, as well as ground transportation. They will be touring Washington, D.C. before jamboree, so lodging, food, and fees for the various attractions they will visit along with more ground transportation is included. The “shakedown” events to prepare the Scouts for Jamboree is also included. Then, of course, there is the National Jamboree fee plus the Platinum Package. All-in-all, it is a good deal.

This is where the Jamboree story splits. You see, I decided to volunteer to staff the Jamboree on the User Experience & Data Management team, so I have a separate journey to relate. Staff assignments are split into 2 sessions, but you can volunteer for both. I went with 2nd session. At my age (think prehistoric), the single-session rate is $700. That is much less than the council contingent fee but it doesn’t include airfare, sightseeing, etc. If you are younger, the staff fee may be less. I believe they are still looking for staff if you are interested.

So, now I have been accepted on the “Data Management” team and am waiting for my first team meeting expected later this month. I have completed the needed physical and have all of the required and recommended immunizations (I got 4 all at the same time, 2 in each arm… OUCH!). I am excited to attend my first Jamboree and will post again in April or May.
