How do you get your troop to the next level?
Send scouts to National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT).
Courses now open for 2021 are Summer 1 (June 6-12) and Summer 2 (June 13-18).
TRAIN THEM
Make sure you have trained leaders. For our youth that starts with Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops, Crews, or Ships (ILST/C/S) and continues to NYLT. Your unit will directly benefit from sending older scouts through this amazingly fun and practical leadership course. The program is youth-led by the council’s most dedicated and enthusiastic scouts who are supported by a team of Wood Badge-trained adults.
TRUST THEM
The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what leaders must BE, what they must KNOW, and what they must DO. Key elements are taught with a focus on HOW TO. The program infuses a week of camping with activities, challenges, presentations, and discussions all focused on leadership and team building. Skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.
LET THEM LEAD
After a week at NYLT, youth return to their units recharged and excited about using new leadership ideas and skills that they practiced. They have a vision of future success for themselves and their patrol or even their entire unit. Scouts take away strategies and knowledge to help themselves and their families, teams, and units at home, church, school, and community. And on top of all of the valuable skills gained, they have fun and make new scouting friends.
“A week of camp life is worth six months of theoretical teaching in the meeting room.” – Robert Baden-Powell
If you have been through Wood Badge, you have seen a similar course and your youth will come out of their NYLT experience speaking the same leadership language. If you haven’t been to Wood Badge, please consider joining the Capitol Area Council’s fall 2021 course. It’s the NYLT for adults.
Since a scout may only take this course once, we want them to get the maximum benefit from the experience; therefore it is essential that they are physically and mentally prepared for the challenges of this course which require maturity, experience, and a proficiency in basic scout skills. Minimum requirements: Scouts BSA youth must be at least 13 (and not yet 18) and First Class. Venturers/Sea Scouts must be 14 and not older than 21. All youth must have a written recommendation from their unit leader.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about NYLT or Wood Badge. I look forward to seeing members of your unit on course.
Yours in Scouting,
Heather Spencer
