Last year’s major update to the Cub Scouting program made some changes to the Arrow of Light program that open up opportunities for troops to recruit new Scouts. Below are the AOL required adventures that are opportunities for your troop.
AOL Bobcat
Requirement #7 – “With your patrol, or with your parent/legal guardian, visit a Scouts BSA troop.”
Troops can proactively plan an “AOL Troop Meeting” (or meetings) and invite the AOLs from one or more Packs to attend. Make sure it is fun and representative of how your troop operates. You could promote a monthly AOL Troop meeting from September to February each year.
Outdoor Adventurer
Outdoor Adventurer has 3 (and more) opportunities to get your troop in front of AOLs.
Requirement #1 – “Learn About the Scout Basic Essentials” (Scouts BSA Visitor option).
This could potentially be combined with the troop visit requirement as a fun activity for a troop visit.
Requirement #2 – “Determine what you will bring on an overnight campout — including a tent and sleeping bag/gear — and how you will carry your gear” (Troop Shakedown option).
This could also make for a fun, great activity for a troop visit.
Requirement #5 – “With your patrol or a Scouts BSA troop, participate in a campout” (Troop Campout option).
How about that! AOLs can now participate in a troop campout. Make extra preparations and ensure you understand the activities that Cub Scouts are allowed to participate in.
Requirement #6, Requirement #7, and Requirement #8
All of these take place at the campout so once the AOLs join you for camping, make sure to include these in your campout plan.
Now is the time to get started working on your AOL action plan. Happy camping. Happy Scouting!
