North Shore District Determined to Accomplish Ambitious Goal
Working together we will ensure that every young person in our district has the opportunity to become a scout by holding a “Join Scouting Night” this fall at every elementary school in Lago Vista ISD & Leander ISD.
This is an incredibly ambitious goal that would be impossible without the dedication of our entire community! A group of volunteers known as the Membership Momentum Team began meeting this past April, and has been working hard to reach out to units, organize events, build meet the teacher night activity kits, create fliers, print stickers, communicate with schools, staff planned JSN events, and generally get the word out!
The North Shore District is also asking troops to help in this effort, and troops are really stepping up. “Troop parents know better than anyone what great benefits our kids get from scouting. Why not send our experienced scouts and their parents to help recruit the next generation. It just makes sense,” according to Jim Whiteaker, Membership Chair for Troops 16/91. “And the packs really appreciate our help since many of them are recruiting from multiple schools. It’s just a great way to give back.”
This fall expect to see older scouts helping at elementary “Meet the Teacher Nights” and at “Join Scouting Nights” across the district throughout the fall! Currently the North Shore District and its eleven existing packs together have 35 Join Scouting Nights scheduled – 31 in-school events and 4 “second chance events” hosted by units at a local park or at their chartered organization’s location.

“Our Membership Momentum Team is focusing primarily on in-school events because our research shows that this is where our parents and families feel most comfortable meeting, and we want to reach every family so that every young person can experience the benefits of scouting.” according to Dave Wood, North Shore District Membership Chair. That said, some of our packs have also put together super fun events at local parks to double the fun and increase the options for a parent that might have a conflict with a specific night! These events are incredibly important to build excitement and enthusiasm about the upcoming scouting year!
As you can imagine, none of this would be possible without our dedicated pack, troop, and district volunteers. And a goal this ambitious could not be accomplished without the generosity and enthusiasm of the scouts in our troops! Together we are building the future of scouting!
