Over spring break, Troop 161 embarked on an exciting trip to the Davis Mountains.

Activities and Adventures

During their stay, scouts participated in various activities, including visiting McDonald Observatory, hiking, biking, and exploring Fort Davis.

A Night Under the Stars

On Saturday night, the troop visited McDonald’s Observatory, where scouts could observe the Big Dipper, Gemini, and Taurus. Everyone enjoyed looking through individual telescopes, getting a close-up view of celestial objects like Mars and Orion’s Nebula. It was a memorable experience, as scouts reflected on the beauty of the night sky before sleeping under the stars.

A Challenging Hike

The next day, scouts prepared for a five-mile hike, gaining 300 feet in elevation. Along the way, they embraced the rocky challenges of the trail and admired breathtaking views from the overlook. They also learned about the CCC trails built during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency.

Biking Through the Mountains

On Monday morning, a small group of scouts set off on a five-mile biking adventure along a rugged and challenging trail. The route took them through striking rock formations shaped by nature, providing both a scenic and thrilling ride.

Exploring Fort Davis

Later that day, the troop visited Fort Davis, a historic site where they learned about the hardships of frontier life. They discovered the common yet often fatal injuries and health conditions faced by soldiers in the past, as well as the medical treatments available at the time.

Memories to Last a Lifetime

The trip was filled with adventure, learning, and unforgettable experiences. Whether it’s hiking, biking, or stargazing, there’s something for every scout to enjoy —an experience we highly recommend to any troop looking for their next great outdoor adventure!

With limited space for photos, we’ve shared just a few highlights—however, there are plenty more unforgettable moments from the trip! I recommend everyone visit the Davis Mountains for their own unforgettable adventure.
