It has been a while since I shared an update with you about the North Shore Commissioner Corps so here we go. Things have changed and I think for the better, though we still have further to go. When we began our post-covid journey almost 2 years ago, the commissioner corps was down to only 4 active commissioners, with 2 Unit Commissioners and 2 Roundtable Commissioners. I am happy to report that today we have 11 active commissioners, including 7 Unit Commissioners and 3 Roundtable Commissioners. Our target is 2 – 3 units per Unit Commissioner but, with 30 units and plans to add at least 4 more this year, we are still well short of our target.

The commissioner corps has also grown in mindset by completely embracing the principles of servant leadership. Commissioners have always been there to help units succeed and we have always done that by focusing on unit health. Until recently, we focused on unit health by scoring each unit on a 1 to 5 scale and watching for both low scores and downward-trending scores. The scoring of a unit was wholely subjective, based on the commissioners interpretation of observations of the unit’s operation.

Today’s commissioners use an objective metrics system to guide conversations with unit leaders. These metrics help us better understand where we can be of the most help because, let’s face it, Scouting succeeds or fails with its units. The recent face-lift, and heart-lift, of commissioner service will help us succeed together.

How can we help you?
