“Action Starts with Me” was the theme of this year’s march, reflecting upon the actions we take within our society. Whether is it in a small or big way, servicing the community builds our character and embraces the notion that this world is not just for me but for us. Troops 358 & 258 had the privilege of being part of the opening ceremonies on Saturday, January 27 at the annual Leander MLK Day March & Celebrations. Thank you scouts Sophie M., Aasiyah S., Aislyn G., Dani O., Lydia C., Daniel C., and Hudson M. for your service to the community.
Fun Fact: Did you know Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Boy Scout from the ages of 11 to 13 in Troop 151 in Atlanta? The troop met at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta and his father served as the troop’s chartered organization representative.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a tremendous supporter of service. On February 4, 1968 while addressing his congregation in Atlanta, Georgia he said, “If you want to be important—wonderful. If you want to be recognized—wonderful. If you want to be great—wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That’s a new definition of greatness. By giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love. And you can be that servant.”
